East Bintan Marine Protected Area

The East Bintan Marine Protected Area (Riau Archipelago, Indonesia) is a 138,000-hectare marine conservation area covering coral reefs, seagrass meadows and mangroves. While legally established, the MPA required sustainable financing and governance systems to move into effective long-term management.
We support the project, working with NGOs, local government, researchers ,and private sector partners to develop a credible pathway from designation to delivery.

Our work

  • Supported fundraising for marine conservation activities in the Riau Archipelago.
  • Researched and prepared grant applications to international conservation funders.
  • Built a pipeline of philanthropic donors and led early-stage funding conversations.
  • Developed concepts for education, tourism-linked and ecosystem-based funding channels.
  • Facilitated cross-sector discussions on sustainable financing mechanisms, including user fees and ecosystem service valuation.
  • Supported alignment between government agencies, NGOs, researchers and business stakeholders around a shared financing roadmap.
